March is National Craft Month, a month dedicated to celebrating creativity and craftsmanship. During this month, individuals are encouraged to embark on new artistic endeavors or explore a new skill. Lee Hunnell, a resident at The Buckingham, a premier senior living community in Houston, has been pouring her creativity into a remarkable textile art piece for the St. Martin’s Church for the past four years. In 2020, she launched this textile art project for installation at St. Martin’s Church. The purpose of the piece is to drape it over the cushion on the church kneeler. Collaborating closely with the Saintly Stitchers, a needlepoint group at St. Martin’s, she has poured her creative energy into this endeavor. The piece consists of a stitch-basket weave technique and has over 125,000 stitches. “When people in church kneel, they see beautiful stained-glass windows, that help translate the story of Jesus. I intended to create an environment where those kneelers could feel at ease, seamlessly translating the story of Christ into their hearts.” Whether young or old, it’s never too late to start a new project or learn a new skill.
