2021 Finance & Strategy Symposium
April 7 + 8, 2021 • Virtual Event

Join LeadingAge Texas & Ziegler for this two-day symposium focused on strategic trends in the aging services sector. This symposium was built to provide industry insight to senior living community leadership (CEOs, CFOs, board members, etc.) about how to not only navigate current trends, but to offer strategies on how to thrive in the current economy and the state of the capital lending environment.

SCHEDULE

Day 1: Wednesday, April 7 | 9 am - 12 noon

with Lisa McCracken, Director, Senior Living Research and Development; Brandon Powell, Managing Director; Rich Scanlon, Senior Managing Director | Ziegler

This opening session will provide an overview of key strategic trends in the senior living & care sector. Speakers will share the latest industry research and provider best practices across a number of hot topics including growth, partnerships, technology adoption and home-and community-based services among others.

Learning Objectives:
• Identify the most significant trends that are shaping the not-for-profit senior living sector
• Explore ways to strategically move forward, beyond the demands and pressures of COVID-19
• Focus the conversation at both the national and state level

with Kaley Lockaby, Director of Marketing, Buckner Retirement Services; Ames Allen, Vice President, Greenbrier Development

The COVID-10 pandemic has had a notable impact on the public perception of sector. Admission restrictions and prospective resident concerns have led to drops in occupancy across all levels of care. While there is great variation across providers related to occupancy and ability to advance sales and marketing goals, all would agree there is a need to work harder and differently when attracting prospective residents. This session will highlight successful sales and marketing tactics that providers are deploying now and how they are preparing for the changing customer expectations.

Learning Objectives:
• Recognize the impact of COVID-19 on sales and marketing efforts in senior living & care
• Explore provider examples of successful tactics to target the senior living consumer
• Discuss successful ways to achieve sales and marketing goals, despite sector headwinds

with Ruth Katz, Senior Vice President of Public Policy/Advocacy, LeadingAge; George Linial, President and CEO, LeadingAge Texas

Hear from LeadingAge policy staff at both the state and national level as they discuss:

• The experience of increased regulation throughout COVID-19
• How the Biden administration is likely to approach regulation of nursing homes and LTSS
• An overview of legislative priorities at both the state and national level

DAY 2: Thursday, April 8 | 9 am - 12:15 pm

with Jon Unroe, CPA, Partner | BKD

Across the past year, most not-for-profit senior living & care providers received some form of government stimulus funds, whether through the PPP (Paycheck Protection Program) or other government programs. This session will cover what providers need to know from an accounting standpoint and how they can plan accordingly for new reporting requirements put forth by the federal government.

Learning Objectives:
• Recap the key government stimulus programs that impacted Not-for-Profit Senior Living providers during COVID-19
• Understand the federal reporting requirements for the various stimulus programs
• Look ahead to what may lie ahead for additional stimulus funds or reporting and accounting requirements

with Brandon Powell, Managing Director; Rich Scanlon, Senior Managing Director | Ziegler

The past year was a mixed bag of performance within the senior living capital markets. After a period of near shut down of the markets with the onset of COVID-19, the market and economy healed and offered record-low borrowing rates for senior living organizations. What can we expect for 2021? This session will discuss what lies ahead for the economy and overall bank and fixed-rate bond markets.

Learning Objectives:
• Discuss the state of the not-for-profit senior living capital markets
• Discuss a comprehensive overview of the various financing options available to not-for-profit senior living provider organizations
• Explore the potential movement of the capital markets and economy for the rest of 2021

with David Dillard, Principal and Practice Leader, HKS; Paul Donaldson, Managing Principal, PRDG; Stuart Jackson, SVP, Greystone Communities

Most providers in the sector are trying to determine what the future looks like and how to best plan for a post-COVID era. This session will bring forth a diverse set of perspectives on key topics such as consumer expectations post-COVID, how providers are planning for development projects with elements such as unit mix, and the evolving design elements that address areas of opportunity that surfaced during COVID (flexible design, air filtration systems, etc.).

Learning Objectives:
• Recognize the impact of COVID-19 on senior living design trends
• Discuss the current trends around senior living & care design
• Discuss how providers need to think differently about future projects as we navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic
