With in-person interaction limited for the foreseeable future, Edgemere is finding creative, alternative ways to keep residents engaged. The senior living community has partnered with the Dallas Independent School District for a pen pal program, pairing residents with local students. As children also hunker down indoors due to COVID-19, the initiative has been a big hit.
Participants exchange letters, artwork and even videos. So far, more than 150 residents and kids have taken part. Despite schools being out for summer break, the letters and packages keep trickling in at the retirement community. Residents are loving the opportunity to bond with the next generation in this special way.
Now that social distancing and isolation are the new norm, such opportunities to connect with the outside world are more beneficial than ever. In fact, social connections boost emotional health and longevity, according to the National Institutes of Health.
