AUSTIN, Texas May 24, 2018 – Sometimes finding the motivation to stay physically active is a challenge. However, residents of Buckner Villas (a faith-based nonprofit senior living community) eagerly stay active thanks to nontraditional forms of exercise offered by the community. Residents rejuvenate their bodies in mindful ways by participating in new and creative forms of exercise led by Wellness Director Julia Tavasoli. In honor of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and to help residents keep fit, the senior living community is offering a variety of aquatic and group fitness classes for residents to enjoy. The most popular are Aqua Fit, a challenging aquatic class which includes cardio, strength and agility; and Better Balance, which incorporates the use of specialized fitness equipment, coordination, drills and balance poses to improve core and leg strength.

Each class meets twice a week and brings out dozens of residents of all ages, including Jim Sadler, 94 and wife Ann, 88. They began attending classes soon after moving to the senior living community. All members of the classes notice benefits, including stronger leg muscles which help with balance and fall prevention.

“The classes offered at Buckner Villas are unlike most places because they keep the level and ability of each resident in mind and offer morning and afternoon classes to fit into our schedules,” said Sadler. “If you are actively mobile or not, our wellness director, Julia, looks for ways to improve your overall health. Those who are interested in attending the classes can speak to other members and ask questions. The classes are inclusive and welcome everyone, plus it’s a great workout. The difference with water aerobic exercises is you’re using muscles you don’t normally use while having fun and keeping the workout easier on your body. In addition to Aqua Fit, we experience health benefits from the balance class. The strength, mobility and balance we gain from the classes gives us tools to prevent falls. The best part is we have a lot of fun. The classes are so enjoyable that sometimes we forget it’s a workout. Julia and the other instructors are very attentive to our individual needs. Julia joins us in the pool, so she is able to help all of us in different ways. Ann and I are fortunate to be in good health, and look forward to attending classes as often as we can.”

Buckner Villas recently completed a $29.8 million expansion which allows the community to serve up to 138 additional seniors. Aqua Fit and Better Balance are part of the growing number of classes held in the wellness center at the senior living community. Tavasoli consistently incorporates new classes to provide well-rounded fitness options.

“We want residents to find a class that brings them joy, and so far, that is exactly what we’ve seen. We incorporate exercises that you’d find at a local gym, but these are targeted towards seniors,” said Tavasoli. “In Aqua Fit, we do cardio, frog jumps, jumping jacks and use handheld weights. For Better Balance – one of the most popular classes – we have yoga mats, steps and balance bars which residents can hold onto at any time. Residents do push-ups as well as standing and seated weight work. Working out as you age reduces the risk for developing dementia, decreases the risk of stroke or heart attack, creates better bone density and gives seniors more confidence and independence. In addition, the group classes add an element of socialization and accountability. It is rewarding for me to see the residents benefit from the classes both physically and mentally.”
