This day-long intensive is designed to ensure attendees are properly prepared and positioned to provide care in a better way under the upcoming Skilled Nursing Patient-Driven Payment Model (PDPM) effective October 1, 2019. Through a deeper understating of the critical elements of the MDS, attendees will learn critical implementation strategies to ensure the ability to capture accurate and audit-proof reimbursement.

 

Sessions will cover the fundamental elements of the PDPM case-mix components, including:

  • the importance of medical diagnosis selection
  • ICD-10 coding
  • the importance of comprehensive interprofessional assessments
  • and accurate capture of resident characteristics on the MDS 3.0. 

After this event, attendees will be able to:

  • Identify the six components of the PDPM (Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), Non-Therapy Ancillary (NTA), Nursing, and Non Case-Mix Payment), understand Case-Mix calculation and key MDS assessment changes.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the link between Medical Diagnosis/ICD-10-CM code selection, section I and section J of the MDS in order to ensure accurate and audit-proof reimbursement.
  • Outline an effective PDPM strategic implementation timeline for their community.
  • Identify metrics to track and proactively manage therapy outcomes, quality measures and hospital readmissions.

MEET YOUR PRESENTERS

Melissa Ward, PT, MS, RAC-CT, VP of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs, Functional Pathways

Melissa Ward has over 20 years of healthcare experience with most of her career devoted to improving care in the senior living community. She brings expertise in program development, maximizing functional outcomes, and ensuring appropriate reimbursement in adherence with state and federal regulatory guidelines. During her 5-year tenure with Functional Pathways, she has been instrumental in the development of best practices for effective and efficient care delivery within multiple alternative payment initiatives. Melissa also oversees the development and execution of Functional Pathways’ PDPM initiatives: PDPM Academy and PDPM Client Portal. Melissa is an active member of the National Association in Support of Long-Term Care (NASL) where she serves on the Medical Services Committee. She is also a Teepa Snow Positive Approach to Care (PAC) trainer and led the development and implementation of Functional Pathways’ holistic, cross-continuum memory care program: Pathways to Engagement.

Gina Tomcsik, LPTA, RAC-CT, CHSP, Director of Compliance and Regulatory Strategy, Functional Pathways

Gina Tomcsik has been working in the post-acute care setting for 28 years. She began her career in the nursing home industry as a rehab tech while studying nursing at the University of Akron 1988-1990 and prior to earning her Associate Degree and license as a Physical Therapist Assistant from Cuyahoga Community College in 1993. Gina has been with Functional Pathways for nine years and currently serves as the Director of Compliance and Regulatory Strategy for Functional Pathways. In this role, Gina oversees the management of the denial and appeals process, internal auditing and monitoring, compliance with regulatory changes and reimbursement in both the inpatient and outpatient therapy settings, and adherence to rehabilitation standards, regulations, and delivery of therapy care. Gina has strong professional skill in documentation compliance and auditing, strategic planning, and team building. Gina passionately provides education in the areas of therapy documentation, billing, and coding at state health care association conferences and has lectured to Health Information Specialists at The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) conference. Gina is active in the National Association for the Support of Long Term Care (NASL) and has met with Senators and Representatives on Capitol Hill in the repeal of the therapy caps among other Post-Acute Care interests. Gina is Certified as a HIPAA Security Professional (CHSP) and is a member of the Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA). She currently holds membership with The American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordinators (AANAC) and is certified in Resident Assessment Coordination (RAC-CT). Gina is currently in the process of obtaining certification in health care compliance.
