FROM LEADINGAGE • JOIN THE FIGHT
Save Medicaid

leadingage.org/save-medicaid

Under the guise of reform, fundamental changes in the financing and structure of the Medicaid program have been proposed that would convert it into a system of per capita funding allocations to the states. Every state would see a reduction in federal Medicaid funding from current levels. These proposals for restructuring Medicaid represent bad ethics and bad economy. LeadingAge opposes these proposals.

Advocacy Update

— FROM LEADINGAGE (NATIONAL) —
ACTION ALERT • Urge Congress To Reject Cuts to HUD Funding

The White House has asked Congress to cut the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) funding in fiscal year 2018 by 15%, compared to HUD’s fiscal year 2017 funding.

Background
The White House has requested insufficient funding for HUD’s programs for the next fiscal year, 2018. Together, HUD’s programs help almost 2 million seniors afford their housing.

What’s at Stake
For fiscal year 2018, funding for HUD programs needs to be sufficient to preserve all existing HUD-subsidized housing and expand resources available for new housing.

Congress must reject HUD funding cuts and raise the federal spending caps so programs can receive needed increases not just to maintain current programs but to expand them so more older adults can be helped.

Edgemere Residents Attend Ultimate Escape Game Dallas

About a dozen residents from Edgemere, an SQLC retirement community, recently participated in a fun and trendy adventure. They went to Ultimate Escape Game Dallas. Participants were locked in a room with the goal of finding a four-digit code to escape. Their mission was to identify the 23rd ingredient in Dr. Cola’s secret pop recipe, not by taste, but through Dallas-themed puzzles which spotlight the Lone Star State’s storied history. The catch – residents had just one hour to solve the puzzles and escape. George and Janet Clayton were two of the first Edgemere residents to sign up for the game. They say when they saw the game in the community’s monthly newsletter it caught their eyes, and they knew they had to try it out. They have never participated in an escape room game before until now, and enjoyed the challenge. The couple says they’ve always been interested in mysteries and trivia. They enjoy keeping their minds active, and participating in an escape room was the perfect fit.

Parkway Place Couple Celebrates 75th Wedding Anniversary

In 1942, World War II was at its peak, a helicopter took its first cross-country ride and Walt Disney’s animated movie “Bambi” was released. It’s also the year that Anna and Sidney Binder got married. On June 28, 1942, the 17 and 20-year-old sweethearts tied the knot in Houston. Now, at the ages of 92 and 95 the couple celebrated their 75th anniversary. The Binders say a lot has changed in the last seven decades, but their feelings for each other have remained the same. To commemorate the occasion, Parkway Place, a senior living community, gathered to celebrate their love on their anniversary with a party. So, what’s the key to a long-lasting marriage? The Binder’s say you need to care for each other more than you care for yourself, have a sense of humor and admire each other.
